My wife drinks too much…

Mary Fenwick, columnist for Psychologies magazine, revisits this reader’s question:

When we go to events, my wife often drinks too much and (I think) makes a fool of herself. I understand why she does it – she is shy and it gives her confidence, but I am embarrassed by her, and when she is drunk she can be unpleasant to me. We have talked about it and sometimes things improve but never for long. She says I am controlling but I just don’t want to spend time with her like this. I love her wholeheartedly – when she is sober.
